AMD 2600 Driver Win 3bit And 64bit
As with the windows xp bootcamp insatllation my grahics card the ATI RADEON PRO HD 2600 shows up under device manager as the Ati MOBILITY 2600 XT, this is NOT correct and wasnt correct when i had windows xp installed via bootcamp but the online trick/fix worked by installing the newer updated drivers for the ATI RADEON HD 2600 PRO by manually pointing the installer to the newly download drivers for xp and once that was done my card read correctly under the device manegr in xp and my performance was quadrupled!!!! However since i have now installed Windows 7 64 bit,the same problem appears agin but when i download the correct 64 bit windows 7 drivers form the ati site and even the dedicated bootcamp windows 7 64 bit drivers nad attempt to point the installer to them the error appears ' This driver does not appear to work with this version of windows' so basically the old xp bootcamp fix doesnt work with windows 7 64 bit with bootcamp running. There has got to be an easy workaround or fix for this! Tons of windows 7 64 bit bootcamp users are experienceing this install error and without the driver being installed and updating the card to what it truly is and NOT THE MOBILITY VERSION THAT IS BEING DETECTED, we can all run games like before in xp with way better performace. Until then we are all screwed and are forced to run the updated drivers for the mobility XT card. PLEASE PLEASE HELP US IF YOU UNDERSTAND WHAT I AM SAYING. Look around on the apple bootcamp forums and you will see a bunch of people complaining about the same thing with no solution for over 2 years.
I have sent an email to AMD formerly ATI requesting assistance but i am sur ethey will just blow me off. This is a very easy problem that could be fixed by a tech savy person. WHoever can fix this problem at least for me personally,i will gladly sned you at least $100 via paypal for your hard work and time. Without this being fixed i have no choice but to buy anothermac with a better graphics card since the imac i have is not upgradeable beyond RAM. Like i said this was the same problem with windows xp in bootcamp before i installed lion.

The fix worked. I dont want to hear that the card is NOT a true hd 2600 PRO whn i know it is and have succesfully used the driver hack before with awesome results. It is NOT a mobility card whatsoever. It is an ATI RADEON 2600 HD with 256 megs of VRAM,not the best but still ok to run even the latest pc games with bootcamp. Please please help me! Thank you very much in adfvance for reading this! IMac, Mac OS X (10.7), 2.4 ghz Intel Core 2 Duo 4 gigs RAM Posted on Aug 4, 2011 3:59 PM.
Below is what I had to do to work around this issue - I've been running with the modified graphics drivers for over a week now, including running some games under Windows 7. Apologies if this is too basic, but I figured I would write it out step-by-step for anyone who needed the background, rationale, plus instructions: Procedure to manually update iMac Radeon HD 2600 PRO video card under Windows 7 (64 bit). Rationale: >Boot Camp drivers incorrectly identify the video card my 24' iMac (24-inch Mid 2007 2.8 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo - the graphics card is shown as a 'ATI Mobility Radeon HD 2600 XT') - this has been a long-standing problem when using my iMac under Boot Camp. You can find procedures online about how to update the drivers manually by obtaining them from AMD then installing them. Background: >When I was previously running Windows XP, I was able to perform the graphics driver update per the online instructions, without any problems. >When I updated to Windows 7, 64-bit (because I updated my Mac OS to 10.7 [Lion] and Windows XP was no longer supported in Boot Camp), I could no longer update the graphic card drivers to the Win7 64-bit version (it was giving an error that the driver was not supported) using the same procedure.
>The solution I finally came upon was to modify the INF file that comes with the drivers from AMD. I take no credit for this, except for the fact that I adapted a procedure I found for doing this for graphics cards in notebooks.
The original place I found this is here. NOTE & DISCLAIMER: This is the first time I have done something like this, so I don't claim to fully understand every step that is going on here, nor if every step is needed.
I based this on the procedure referenced in link immediately above and it seems to be working for me (that is, my graphics card driver was ultimately updated for Win7, 64-bit just like had been previously under WinXP) - YMMV. >>This procedure was done with the AMD Radeon™ Desktop Video Card Drivers for '64 bit Windows Vista/Windows 7 '; Version 11.7, posted 2011-07-27 (main page: ) 1.
Driver only was downloaded from AMD. Downloaded file was installed to default location: C: ATI 3. Gather info about the graphics card: 3a. Open the Device Manager (Start>Computer [right-click]>Properties) 3b. Expand the 'Display Adapters' item to reveal the GPU (mine was listed as 'ATI Mobility Radeon HD 2600 XT', same as it was under XP) 3c. Right-click on the GPU and select 'Properties' 3d. Click the 'Details' tab in the Properties window.
Click the drop-down under 'Property' (top item should say 'Device description) - find the item in the list that says 'Hardware Ids' >>There were four values for my card, shown below: PCI VEN_1002&DEV_9583&SUBSYS_0083106B&REV_00 PCI VEN_1002&DEV_9583&SUBSYS_0083106B PCI VEN_1002&DEV_9583&CC_030000 PCI VEN_1002&DEV_9583&CC_0300 3f. Right click on the first value and select 'Copy' - paste it into a separate document. I actually copied all these items and pasted them into a separate text document, but only ended up using the first one. Go back and click the drop-down under 'Property' - find the item in the list that says 'Inf section' (it was far down the list). Copy the value shown there and paste into a separate document; my value read: ati2mtag_M76 4. Modify the INF file from AMD: 4a. First thing I did was make a backup copy of the directory containing the files that were installed in step 2 (located at C: ATI) - my directory was called '11-7_vista64_win7_64_dd'.
Go into this path: C: ATI Support 11-7_vista64_win7_64_dd Packages Drivers Display W76A_INF 4c. Find the INF files (icon is a document with a gear on it), that start with 'C7.' (mine were called 'C7122569' & 'CH122569'). Open the 'C7.' File (it opens in Notepad). Go down to the section called '[ATI.Mfg.NTamd64.6.1]'. Do a 'Find' command for 'ATI Radeon HD 2600 PRO' (if you search for a shorter phrase, be aware there are other '2600 PRO' cards in the list).
>>The exact line I found was 4f. Replace that line with the Inf section value and the first Hardware ID value, using the same format as the orginal line. >>The new entry I made read: 'ATI Radeon HD 2600 PRO' = ati2mtag_M76, PCI VEN_1002&DEV_9583&SUBSYS_0083106B&REV_00 4g. Close the file, saving your changes. Repeat steps 4d - 4g, using the 'CH.'
Updating the graphics driver using the modified INF files: 5a. Go back to the Device Manager and expand the 'Display Adapters' item again to show the 'ATI Mobility Radeon HD 2600 XT' GPU 5b. Right-click on the GPU and select 'Update Driver Software.' In the resulting window, choose 'Browse my computer for driver software'. I navigated to the 'C7.' File along the following path: 5e.
At this point, I was shown a window that showed 'ATI Radeon HD 2600 PRO' twice (that's all that was in the list). I selected the first instance and it moved on. I got a warning that the driver was unsigned, obviously I allowed it to move forward with the installation. The updating proceeded and the screen momentarily went black, twice. After the second time the description in the Device Manager changed to reflect that the GPU was now 'ATI Radeon HD 2600 PRO'. FINAL NOTE: as of right now everything seems to be running properly and I have experienced no problems or graphical glitches.
If anyone reading this sees an obvious problem with what I've done, please let me know. Posted on Aug 8, 2011 12:52 PM.

Aug 8, 2011 12:52 PM. Sounds great! Thank you very much for your help but can anyone confirm this is truly updating the card correctly to the right ati radeon hd 2600 pro and not just tricking the inf file into displaying it an an ati radeon hd 2600 pro????
I just uninstalled windows 7 bc i was so sick of this graphics driver error and couldnt play **** with it as a mobility card so i reinstalled windows xp sp3. But now that this possible fix has arrived i am tempted to reinstall windows 7 and try it out! But i just wanna be sure its the correct fix. Other than that i cant believe you figured this hack out! I have looked everytwhere online and even emailed amd, their response was totally wrong they misunderstood what i was asking.
How bout thisDRBST,can you run some benchmarks now that you have updated the correct driver and post back what the results were, this will give us a better idea that the card is performing the way it should???? Thanks again sir. Also please email me with your email so that in the future when we got to update the drivers again and happen to encounter any more problems, i can communicate with you bc on the aple communites site you cant direct message any user.
Most of the time you cant even reply if the post has been archived. Aug 8, 2011 5:45 PM.
I just uninstalled windows xp sp3 and deleted the bootcamp partition, used bootcamp assistant to reformat to the coorect size i has windows 7 before, and now am currently restoring my aufgust 4th windows 7 system with winclone. Yes,i got it working in lion!
Go to to download the modfied winlcone 2.3 version that works with lion. For all you windows 7 users, uncheck all the boxes in the winclone preferences but leave the radio button clicked for use mountable filesystem, uncheck compressed dmg!
Should work as usual to backup and restore windows 7 bootcamp partitions as before. My questio to 'DRBST' i will attempt to do the modifed inf file instructions but for those having errors you and i could simply upload the enitre ATI folder after its been modified to work correctly and other could just paste it over their existing ATI folders at the root of theirt windows 7 disks, then skip to step5(updating the graphics driver, when they crowse to the modifed files we made,it should go through like it should. Will make it very easy for others to do if they arent as tech savy as we are. Thanks again sir for all your help and time in this matter. God Bless You!
So excited if this works bc now instead of windows xp,i can run windows 7,utilizing my entire 4 gigs not xp's 3 gigs of ram and use the latest ati/amd driver for my correct ati radeon hd 2600 pro and continue to play the latest games via bootcamp even with my 4 year old imac!!! To DRBST look me up on facebook and i will most definitely add you as a friend this way we can communicate without putting our emails on here for all to see. My ichat name is justRSX,hit me up on there and i will send you my name on facebook! Thanks again for everything.
Aug 8, 2011 7:06 PM. So far so good,it was a little tricky but I go through it. I was even able to use winclone 2.3 to restore my windows 7 backup over my newly created xp one, winclone still works with lion,u just have to uncheck all the boxes in the preferences except for the radio button that says make a mountable dmg.download the hacked update winclone 2.3 from roaringapps.com. Cant belive we cant direct message each other through here. I will wait until were both on ichar to exchange contact info.ill leave ichat online for the next few days.what is ur ichat screenname? To install the 64 bit bootcamp drivers against apples wishes, the error that sayscant be installed on this hardware,u simply browse to the disk u made with lion with updated drivers, click open and go to the bin64 folder, then to packages, then to drivers, right click and select troubleshoot compatibility, let it complete then proceed with the install process.it worked for me with all previous bootcamp driver updates. The next problem I have is even though I updated with software update to the latest bootcamp drivers,i am showing two sets installed in the afd/remove programs list.almost like the updated drivers didnt overwrite the previous 2.0 drivers, therefor there are 2 sets running, could cause conflicts.
Tonight I want to try and click uninstall remove on the bootcamp 2.0 driver package in the list and see if the older set goes away and then when I click about bootcamp control panel,it should display at least bootcamp 3.2 not 2.0. Once we are in contact I will send u whatever apps u want,i have a few windows 7 utilities that are priveless and keep windows running smoothly and efficiently.such as tuneup utilities 2011,advanced registry cleaner pro,and revo uninstaller pro.also paragon manager11 pro can backup, reatore and repair full clones of apple bootcamp partitions,! Last night I got copycat X which im told can also make bootable clones of bootcamp partitins, but when I ran it,bootcam) doesnt show up as a volume to click backup or clone with.i will play around more when I have time.winclone does seem to still work,if u do it the way I have been, but I want another cloning utility to use also, and one that isnt duscontinued like winclone and recieves regular updates. Aug 9, 2011 1:05 PM. Thanks for the update. I'll keep an eye out for you on iChat, I'm not really interested in getting a bunch of software, but I'd like to continue the discussion so we can hopefully eek a little more life out of our older iMacs. However I have to give a somewhat depressing update.
I ran benchmarks (two different free apps I found) using the modified driver and then again after using the the Device Manager to install the latest official (Mobility) driver it could find: the result was identical for both driver types and for both tests that were run. Right now I have no reason to believe that I'm actually getting the 64-bit PRO drivers to install at all, or if they are they are not improving anything. Aug 9, 2011 3:27 PM. I had a feeling that the hack was only renaming it and not actually installing the driver so that it can perform at the correct specs. I may just restore xp and continue where I left off.at least I know I can get it to work right in xp.
To tell u the truth, the 64 bit windows 7 runs slower than the 32 bit xp sp3! Maybe if we can download the windows xp 64 bit bootcamp dedicated driver and extract the lines of code from that inf file and then use it with ur process it may run correctly.**** I wish someone from ati could actually speak english and understand our situation.this is their fault the drivers dont install correctly.dont they test that ****? Do u know any smart gpu guys that could help us??
This is getting ridiculous,if it would only install like it did in xp all would be fine.i think its due to the fact that windows 7 ***** and isnt at a point with sp1 where things work as they should maybe with sp2 it wil be resolved.thanx for ur help,at least the teo of us know what is going on and what needs to happen to make ecerything work right.have u tried running a deceny game that ran well when we had the xp hack we did previously.ive only tried one game and it ran choppy, slightly better after our mod but still not like I remember itto be Aug 9, 2011 5:24 PM. I had thought about trying that, but I've spent so much time getting things installed and working with the 64-bit version I hate the idea of having to revert to the 32 bit version. However if you try it, let me know what happens - great if it works, it'll be a shame to lose the ability to address the full 6 GB of RAM I have, but it might be an overall gain if we get the better graphics performance back.
To answer your questions about games: I've tried Left 4 Dead only at this point. As mentioned above, I've spent so much time trying to get things to set up, I haven't had much time to actually play.
Aug 9, 2011 7:57 PM. Check this out i am going to paste something interesting i found out by checking my older working windows xp sp3 radeon hd 2600 pro drivers packages/displaydriver/cog file when opened in notepad. Note the difference in specs between the working version from xp and the mofidfied string we pasted in the inf file to get the driver to install in windows 7 64 bit big difference in settings! Should we try your method again but paste my best known working configurtion settings into the new 64 bit driver package with notepad and see if it not only installs correctly as before with your trick but tells the card the right clock speeds and max memory to use when palying games?????????????????? May work Aug 9, 2011 8:33 PM. Ok so i just ran a benchmark with the modified driver installed same as before after your hack applied. These are the results!
Could it be that the 2600 XT is a better card then the HD 2600 pro???? I guess it is bc its not the mobility version. I am so confused at this point. All i know is way back when i first had bootcamp, gaming performance sucked. Then i found the hack to enable it as the correct hd 2600 pro and my performance tripled. Now even with the modified driver install it seems as sluggish as when i first payed games with bootcamp a few years ago before the hack to change it to the correct card.
I wish i remembered the benchmark results when i was playing certain games,so i could reinstall them and run the benchmarks again and compare them. I have nothing to compare them to since i dont remember. **** it please help us apple and amd!!!
All of you out there reading these posts by us,put some work into this and together maybe we can fix this issue so that all of us can play games as we did before upgrading to lion! Aug 9, 2011 8:58 PM.
