Friedensnobelpreis 2014-10-08 Fat se facking faz?! [.]

Was, wenn Deutschland heute rausfliegt?

Jetz so vonne attituede her.

Hier wurde physisch ausgebuegelt, was manchmal an ideen fehlte. Dat jibs do' nich!'

(bild: Til Schweiger in BangBoomBang).

Die wollen doch da was verschleiern. Was war denn gestern noch so? Was wurde denn gestern noch so durchgewunken? Gab es was, was wir uebersehen sollten, waehrend wir vergnuegt nach Koch schauen? Und ausserdem.

Koch kommt doch eh zurueck.

Wow Carullus! Great statistic! Thanks very much for the new shell!

I must, however, remark that I somehow always liked the phrase 'In the immortal words of our founder, odondon irl.' In our introduction and noticed you left it out this time.

I remember that for the 100th CC, we even managed to contact odondon irl and invite him for a brief visit - he explained then that it was due to some outer conditions - no free internet access at his work place, as far as I recall - that he stopped participating, and not a lack of interest. He also said that he wasn't even sure if it was him who founded the CC - but we refused to accept that and continued to 'knit the myth' by mentioning him in the introduction. I am a bit of a traditionalist in that kind of little things, so I'd appreciate if we continued using the Good Ol' introduction. And before anyone can say that I could simply make sure by building the next shell myself: I will really be quite busy in the coming days and weeks and beg you to release me from that duty for the time being.

Author (428405) 07 Nov 12, 21:36 Comment. I am not sure congratulations are in order. After many months of election circus we are pretty much where we used to be before the election cycle started. So I guess the resolution of the looming fiscal cliff will proceed along the same lines as the 'resolution' of the debt ceiling issue. Local election news: Property taxes will increase thanks to $120 in new school bonds. Sales tax will increase by.125%, to one of the highest levels in California. San Jose will have a $10 minimum wage, trailing only San Francisco (I think theirs is $10.25).

CA state election news: Death penalty retained. State income tax increase on incomes above $250K. Three-strikes law reform passed. California has been represented by two female senators for many years: Dianne Feinstein and Barbara Boxer (coincidentally, both are Jewish).

Last I checked, only two other states were in the same position: Maine was presented by senators Olympia Snowe and Susan Collins, while Washington has Maria Cantwell and (forgot, Wikipedia to the rescue) Patty Murray. Sadly, Olympia Snowe did not stand for re-election, she was one of the few remaining moderates among leading Republicans. Author (236158) 07 Nov 12, 23:44 Comment. You were trying to raise $2000 in 2 minutes among students?

The mind boggles. Either there are tons of students or these are well-heeled students indeed. My wife pointed out that the reason politicians who are able to work across the aisle (that's basically moderate Republicans and fiscally conservative Democrats) are rapidly becoming extinct is that politicians need tons of money to finance election campaigns, and those amounts can only raised by taking extreme positions. As a result we see fruitless discussions whether some tax rate should be 15% or 35% because there are no campaign contributions to be had for the middle-of-the-road person who would support a rate of 25%.

I think my wife called that one correctly. Senator Snowe cited 'hyperpartisan' antics in Washington that make it impossible to get anything done as the reason she chose not to run for office again. While both Mr. Romney and Mr.

Obama invoked the 'we are all Americans' mantra in their speeches last night, I will judge both parties by their deeds and not their words in this regard. Like Amy I am registered as neither Democrat nor Republican, and gave votes to candidates from both parties in this election. But it is always a 'lesser of two evils' choice for me, which irks me. The moderate candidates who I might be able to support with conviction don't make it through the primaries. Author (236158) 08 Nov 12, 02:59 Comment. *waitingformyvotetobecounted* Please do not snicker or snigger behind my back or to my face, some day my state will will become colorized like an old film shown on Turner Broadcasting Networking.

At least there were no hanging chads, just standing Sams, Susans and Stevens. The lines to the south were pretty amazing since I walked into my polling place and would not have had to wait whatsoever if I had not asked for directions.

If I had gone with my gut feeling there would have no wait, instead I had to wait for one guy in front of me to provide his id and sign for his ballot. It took me longer to drive to the polling place than to get my ballot, but I am happy that others did persevere and exercise the right and civic duty in addition to exercising their patience, muscles and stamina. (The other precinct voting at my site did have a line so I am sure I had perfect timing and also the benefit of a much smaller precinct since we had only 4 bubbling stations on my side of the gym where the other precinct seemed to have a dozen or more.) Even though I did not really read the ballot and just was bubbling in circles it took me at least 5 minutes because the ballot was so long. I had my cheat sheet (completed sample ballot) with me so I just needed to know the general question and find my answer.

If people had not studied/prepared before arriving it would take a long time to read the ballot where there were THIRTEEN constitutional amendments that our state legislature put on the ballot. Most were actually legislation that the state legislature should have either passed or rejected rather than kicking it to the ballot and trying to pollute our constitution with laws. They previously had passed a law requiring citizens proposed constitutional changes to be listed on the ballot in something like 75 words or less, but of course there was no limit to constitutional changes proposed by the legislature so many were extremely lengthy. Some involved what seemed to be power grabs by the legislature, such as one which would have limited the judicial branch of government and put them under the thumb of the legislature.

When voting I too tried to find candidates I thought would do the best job and would be more moderate. @Norbert weren't the primary election rules changed in California to open them up so you can vote for any candidate you choose rather than only from your party's candidates? I thought I heard about the California primary voting rules change on NPR and it was a move to hopefully have the more moderate candidates prevail. I thought I heard that the two candidates with the highest vote totals would move onto the general election, so it might be possible for two democrats or two republicans to be on the general election ballot. It seems that states that have open primaries tend to have more moderate candidates in the general election.

I think some of the New England states have open primaries. It would make sense that the extremist would have a harder time winning if an independent or someone for the other party could weigh in and vote for candidates. In my state the primaries are closed, so you cannot cross party lines until the general election and by then it might be too late.

Someone from the other party you might want or would seriously consider many times has been eliminated in the primary. Hoping that Lara Chu, Dixie and the others along the east coast maintain their power and do not get covered with too much snow. I know my brother just got power back yesterday at 5 pm and is praying that it is not knocked out again by this nor'easter. *wavingtohm-uswachtelkoenigamymim* Author (262368) 08 Nov 12, 05:43 Comment. The primary rules in effect in California now allow each party to decide whether it wants their primary to be open. The registrar of voters will send 'decline to state' voters like me a note, asking whether they wish to receive a ballot for any of the parties that opened their primaries. I applied for a Democratic ballot for the 2008 primaries, but this year none of the parties that would have interested me opened their primaries to non-affiliated voters.

The other thing that changed (I think more recently) at the state level is that for any state assembly district, the two candidates with the highest count get placed on the November ballot independent of party affiliation. In my state assembly district, two Democrats and one Republican ran for office, of which the incumbent Democrat and the Republican were left for this election. In another nearby district two Democrats ended up running against each other, I think the younger challenger prevailed over the older incumbent.

I saw down in Southern California they had a district in which two Republicans were ran against each other. The new mechanism provides more choice for districts that overwhelmingly go to one party, in that there can be successful same-party challengers. Author (236158) 08 Nov 12, 06:29 Comment. @sachs and others I found a Miami sample ballot online which looked similar to my sample ballot. The sample is a bit longer than the actual ballot because it includes all district races and house of representative races which your actual ballot only lists who you can vote for. The constitutional amendments are at the end.

If you are further interested googling for the League of Women voters recommendations on the amendments, you can find some brief explanations and their recommendation. Probably the Miami Herald, Orlando paper or Tampa Bay Times might have some commentaries on them too. Only 3 amendments passed which were the ones to reduce property taxes for senior citizens, first responders spouse who died in the line of duty and disabled veterans (possibly their spouses too). Some of the recommendations were to vote these down because defining taxes and tax rates in the constitution should not be done. *willrespondtohmuslatertodayofftoworkandsomemajortestingofaprojectthathastobecompletedbeforeyearend* *winkzuhmuswachtelkoenigsachs* Author (262368) 08 Nov 12, 14:12 Comment. Good to hear you were in a 'lucky' region this time, Lara. There were several reports here that things are not so good in some parts of the city, particularly due to new power breakdowns.

What really surprised me was the fact that the reports here were about storm 'Athena'. After the previous one was named 'Sandy' I would have expected some name with 'T'. Just now I read that this only was an inofficial name created by some weather channel. Hope your interview was successful - or has it still to come? Since no one seems to be around I'll continue this one.

@ snickerdoodle: Just checked your link. I'm not surprised any longer why people lined up and waited their turn for hours. If you have to read all of that. And even if you don't have to because you're well prepared it must take quite a while to fill in everything. How simple ballots are round here compared to that with only one issue to vote for. Author (638558) 08 Nov 12, 19:20 Comment. Thank you, Carullus, for the new home.

A ranking list like that was really appropriate as an echo of the presidential election. Hopefully, no one will be questioning your scores - otherwise, we would have to do a CC-recount. I really appreciate your effort, hm -- us, yet it was too late fore me. I didn't know 'tut tut tut - ein Auto' was a fixed phrase. However, harambee's link was very interesting.

I must check what is still in the attic. Many school books form series, some have many volumes others have few volumes. But as far as I remember, we never finished a series. We worked through two or three volumes, but before we could start the third/fourth volume, a new series had taken over.

So, what remained, is a feeling of imperfect accomplishment. Author (299747) 09 Nov 12, 01:48 Comment. OK, caught myself just in time here. I was reading 'sammelten wir auch K lopapier' (toilet paper [1]) for teachers, which would have been strange enough, but when I read about '24 reams' I went back to double check:) Kopierpapier it is. 'Ries' is the correct German expression for (long) ream, but I've never heard anybody use it in German.

(Even though paper is packaged and sold in quantities of 500 pages.) The standard unit is 'Blatt', so instead of 24 reams we'd probably just call it '12.000 Blatt'. Very impressive figure, of course, regardless of how you put it. [1] This can only happen to Austrians, I suppose, because Germans call it Toilettenpapier. Author (670120) 09 Nov 12, 08:31 Comment.

I say 'WC-Papier' and also try to avoid the word 'toilet' whenever possible. So I ask 'Where can I wash my hands, please?' But I guess this is rather unusual (and people look somehow irritated).

Correcturito for Amy-Mimi: it's das Zitat and der Wettbewerb. I also like the Churchill-quote, thank you, Robert--US. And reading the old CC 100 was much fun - so much Kling and Klong in it! I am looking forward to our party on the occasion of CC 300! And a recommendation for Carullus: The 'heute-show' every Friday evening at 22.30 - you should receive the 'ZDF' in Austria, shouldn't you? And now a nice afternoon / morning to all snails!

Author (244785) 09 Nov 12, 12:38 Comment. I guess you'd get the 'Heute Show' on the web too.

Download Free Q-Tip Amplified 320 Rar more. I watched it several times on TV and it's occasionally quite funny, but then I'm not informed enough about German politics and politicians to get all the jokes. No lawyer, no doctor, no police, no vampires - you're relly giving us a tough job to find something for you, Carullus;-) I recently watched the first episodes of 'The Tudors'. The first series is already back from 2010 or so but I think the 3rd and final one came out not too long ago. Yesterday there was 'The Others' on ARTE.

No idea if anyone knows it, but I really liked that 'sort of' ghost story. Author (638558) 09 Nov 12, 14:23 Comment. Thank you for the new house, Carullus! New TV shows - if you like a hint of scifi (it is not really) you might enjoy Revolution. JJ Abrams is one of the producers. It is set in the near future (I think), the main idea is that the world lost electricity and how everyone is coping. There are huge logical issues in the plot, but overall it is a well-made show and quite interesting.

I stopped watching all other new tv shows. I gave Nashville a try because someone raved about it, but it is like Dallas on steroids. Author (426973) 09 Nov 12, 17:11 Comment. No lawyer, no doctor, no police, no vampires - you're really giving us a tough job to find something for you, Carullus;-) I never said it was easy:) I actually myself, and there are a few that sound interesting. For starters I'll be watching the pilots of 'Elementary' (another contemporary take on Sherlock Holmes, located in New York, Lucy Liu starring as Dr. Joan Watson) and 'The Neighbors' (a family moving to a gated community quickly learns that all of their neighbors are aliens).

Schaust du auch gern 'The Colbert Report', Carullus? I used to, but I find Colbert a little too much over-the-top for my taste these days.

Then you only need an USB-stick with a receiver and can watch all the programs provided. I think I'll just get the few shows I'm watching (Castle, The Mentalist, 30 Rock, NCIS, Leverage) online. There's also TV tax to consider, which I'm loath to pay. Author (670120) 09 Nov 12, 20:36 Comment. Hi everyone, My fingers wehre still crossed, but I disentangle them now for another small correction: '. Und werde's bestimmt mein Leben lang nie wieder vergessen.'

I'd say it's either 'werd's' or 'werde es' without any ellipsis. 'werde's' looks very strange to me.

Lots of work on my desk, what is particularly annoying since one colleague is on holidays, her first substitude fell ill and now I got this job in addition to mine too - without any experience how to do it properly, since no one expected me to end up alone on it so soon as 6g fresh-baken 6g second substitude;-( Author (638558) 13 Nov 12, 12:52 Comment. Well, all in all it sounds promising, doesn't it, Lara? What I don't understand: when they look for somebody who is 'into German' and that's what the job is about (and that is true, isn't it?), how can the boss then express (indirectly, through her behavior towards you) that she 'has something against German speaking people' in an application interview? If you are right and she was just testing you under stress, you certainly did well, because you managed to answer the questions with confidence. Author (428405) 13 Nov 12, 17:47 Comment. Somehow I missed to mark the CC thread 296 and got lost. Craftsmen left eventually and I started dusting and cleaning.

Quite a challenge! Some invoices will arrive soon and then the 'negotiations' with the insurance will be another job. It got cold at night in my area in Germany, my car was frozen over as I still cannot put it into the garage which is used as winecellar. In spite of some sun during the day I seem to suffer a bit from November blues. But looking forward to a 'Stammtisch' with LEOs in Frankfurt:-) on Saturday, Nov 17. @ shhh: I just don't know how to talk about grammar in any language besides German. I don't know how to talk about grammar in any language including German. In school we never had to learn the relating terms and later on, no matter if it was in English or French, I always 6g/swindled through/6g (how do you really say 'sich durchschwindeln' in English, can't find it on LEO) without this vocabulary. I saw then that life would be much easier with knowing it, but I was always to lazy to learn it. @ Lara: Good to hear they liked you (and you liked them).

Maybe even the partially wrong way description was part of the test: Does she manage to make it right in time to our interview nevertheless? @ Jepito: Good luck! Author (638558) 14 Nov 12, 22:50 Comment. We had loads of grammar lessons - first in German class, then in Latin class. But I won't complain, because that was at least better than my Italian teacher: 'So, this is how you form the congiuntivo.

Oh, you want to know when to use it? Well, it's basically the same as the subjonctive in French.' Thanks a bunch, a-hole, I never learned French:-( And I think my grammar lessons did help me, both with learning other languages and with writing better German. By the way, it was the other way round with poetry analysis: we did that first in Latin, then in German. So, the reading yesterday went astonishingly well!

Maybe, hopefully, we succeeded in not scaring the audience away, and some of them will come again in the future. Author (665776) 15 Nov 12, 09:52 Comment. Harambee, yes, there was time, but not many were interested in asking questions. Maybe you want to come next time and ask something?;-P But seriously, if anyone here happens to be in Berlin when our next reading is and wants to come, you are very welcome.

Goldammer, I have the feeling the CC makes me smarter, too, or at least more knowledgeable:-) About grammar, of course, but also spelling, vocabulary, and the many many topics that come up here. So, thank you, everybody!:-) Author (665776) 15 Nov 12, 12:03 Comment.

Ok, if a disclaimer were mandatory for the CC I would write that I did not have much of formal education in theory of grammar and grammatical expressions. I would credit myself with the snotty hypothesis that I sometimes had a not too bad feel for some aspects of the German language. However, I would also admit that quite often I did not have the faintest idea why one version of a sentence was correct and the other one not so good. So my comments and correcturitos should be seen as educated guesses of a nature-boy;-) But, fortunately, a disclaimer is not mandatory, so I can switch to something totally different: I think there are enough replies but any AE snail with dissenting view is welcome to post: Author (91833) 15 Nov 12, 13:10 Comment. It's good to know that your local IT department is able to override the list of blocked sites. I once worked for a company where the local 'censor' told me that he could not override the list furnished to them by the software provider.

In order to get me the files I wanted, he personally retrieved them using his system at home and emailed them to me. Helpful administrator, but idiotic software. I have also found that a lot of tools trigger based on simple keyword search. I once found a site blocked because in the comments section to an article, someone had used the word 'pussy' in the sense of 'wimp'. I was puzzled that this harmless site had been blocked and stared at it on my machine at home for more than five minutes before I spotted the offending term. I assume that software was stupid enough to even trigger on 'pussyfooting', but I didn't try.

Thus my question whether news sites could be flagged (and you would get into trouble) because they may be reporting on 'Pussy Riot' or mention methods of birth control or other nefarious contents of that nature. I wouldn't be so sure about a lack of screening for politics, and can imagine it might not be the best idea to conduct research on anarchists or the American Communist Party from your computer at school:-) Yes, Ben Franklin would be spinning in his grave (at about 10K RPM!) if he knew what was going on these days. Author (236158) 18 Nov 12, 02:38 Comment. Good evening!

This completely arbitrary censorship really sounds highly moronic. It contradicts the whole idea of a globally accessible system of communication and databasing. They should rather block sites of creationists, religious fundamentalists, tea-party followers, and other obscurantists. Would it still be possible to place online orders for firearms from school connections? I actually wouldn'd be astonished if it really was. Since I appear here very sporadically, probably nosnail would wonder about prolonged absence anyway. Will be off to Patagonia all of next week.

In two hours a friend will collect me to get to the meeting point and then travel with the group of local birdwatchers to the airport. In the middle of the night. Preposterously early. Wonder if I should try to get a little bit of sleep.

Best wishes to everyone and good night! Author (396690) 18 Nov 12, 03:43 Comment. Amazing to read about the possibilities and problems concerning access to websites which could be helpful but also dangerous in some cases. Not a nice job for the IT-department, but it makes life not easier for people who need those pages e.g. For teaching. I recall that some domains even had a kind of 'back door' with a special name or IP-address.

We had a nice meeting of LEOs from the Frankfurt area and intend to have another one after the holiday season. Author (554696) 18 Nov 12, 08:19 Comment. I sort of followed shhh's advice and read Fforde's first book 'The Eyre affair'.

Actually, I'm halfway through the second book where I met the Cheshire cat working as a librarian as mentioned by Carullus. Must be a great library, by the way;-) The part of shhh's advice I did not follow was reading the original 'Jane Eyre' again. I had read it many years ago, had neither liked nor disliked it and did not want to read it again. Instead I galnced over the Wiki summary to refresh my memory. It's probably good to remember some of the original names of Jane Eyre while reading the Fforde book, but I believe that the latter can even be read in the absence of knowledge about the original story.

One may miss some allusions but the main story can stand for its own and major events of the original are explained in the Fforde book. I really enjoyed the first book, it was funny and also quite suspenseful in the end. I learned a few new words I will probably forget very soon (e.g. Purloin, portent and august - no, not August;-) ), but the main reason for posting this is my wish to show you two sentences that surprised me somehow: Aunt Polly looked at him as you might a spoilt child. And I think Wordsworth was as surprised to see me as I was him.

No problems in understanding those sentences, but I had not expected that kind of construction in English. I would have guessed that something is missing in both sentences. In particular the second one sounds so Denglish to me. I can't tell you exactly why and I'm probably completely wrong, so I would like to ask the ENS whether those sentences are normal everyday constructions to them. I don't put this question into the language lab as it is probably not of general interest. Author (91833) 18 Nov 12, 17:49 Comment.

Leo: I'm so sorry about Thor.:( as to the computer-issue adressed in several earlier posts: I found myself wondering if it would be possible to access pages about Darwin and evolution and/or creationism. Over the last years I really became increasingly worried about the influence that religious fanatics in the US gained especially in schools (crationism in sience classes and the teaching of 'abstinence only') and by now often wonder if there is some sort of religious group behind stuff like this when I read about it. And don't get me started about the nipple-phobia. *sigh* Author (584922) 19 Nov 12, 10:03 Comment. So many thanks, good people, for all the good wishes for Thor. Indeed there would have been emergency attention over the week-end, but too far away - as it happens, a day before the car gave problems and I was advised not to use it till a mechanic has a look at it. It turned out that in the end it would have been no use, anyway.

The x-ray showed that the right front paw was broken, but apparently that would even heal on its own. The major problem was the left hind leg, which was completely shattered and partially removed from the lower spine. An operation would have gone into the thousands without guaranteed success. So Thor returned to his fellow feline Gods, now hunting with them forever and ever. He left us with his twin sister Sheeba, a bundle of joy. We had taken two kitten from the litter of a neigbour's cat - the late Thor and the tiniest of them, which we took out of pity.

This tiny thingie turned into the loveliest little thing, most inquisitive and intelligent, now four months old. A last note on Thor: On the way walking to the vet he jumped out of the shopping basket in which I carried him, onto the street. I have had enough excitement for today.

At present, our Ronja often disappears for several days, usually during periods of hot summer weather. So, that obviously doesn't work. Have a nice Thanksgiving day with your elders!;-) Hi Nefertit - I wasn't sure whether you were a newcomer or my memory was failing.

Welcome, and please tell us your shoe size and credit card number. Amy-MiMi is very keen to put it on her list of CC-participant credit card numbers. Author (428405) 19 Nov 12, 17:47 Comment. @147 Nefertit: credit card size and shoe number question is a running gag in the CC (like the snails etc.) Just a request to tell a bit more about yourself. I saw your nick in some other threads before and was wondering if you relate somehow to Nefertiti (Nofretete) the ancient Egyptian Pharao or the sculpture in Berlin. Looking at the actual political situation at some places around the globe one could start to believe that the end of the world is not that far anymore.

And re Rowling: I enjoyed the HP books immensely. I think they are great youth literature. When I read them, I wished that I could have 'grown up' with them like my sons - they always were about the age of Harry Potter and his friends when the books were first published. But as I said, what I heard and read about her new book didn't make me want to read it. Author (428405) 21 Nov 12, 18:40 Comment. As it is probably not correct to say that you have an obligation to visit LEO, it might be a good idea to change the second sentence, e.g.

It is Wattwanderung and not Wattenwanderung. I'm not sure whether it's wrong but it sounds not too idiomatic to me.

I would add an 'aus': Vielleicht besuche ich Helgoland als Tagesausflug von Hamburg aus. It's a very long time ago that I visited Helgoland, but I agree that a daytrip should be sufficient. Goldammer, I would also prefer 'Wissen erwerben' and in contrast to 'Wissen erlangen' that expression can be found in the Duden.

Nevertheless, you will find a couple of Google hits for 'Wissen erlangen' and I still think that it is not wrong. Author (91833) 21 Nov 12, 19:42 Comment. @179 - I think you would need a book like 'Hesses gesammelte Werke' to keep you a whole week on Helgoland.:) Robert - are you going to rent a car when you are travelling around North Germany? As you will get to some of those Autobahns where there is no speed limit and little traffic, so you actually can go very fast (if you like being a 'Raser') I think I have never said 'moin' to someone I don't know. It would be a polite 'Guten Morgen/Tag'.

But then - I am not from East Frisia. Happy Thanksgiving! And I just realise that I have never before seen an English-language episode of the Peanuts.

I was kind of expecting some sort of smart-alecky response when I wrote that admittedly somewhat muddled sentence, I was just waiting to see who would pounce first:-) I have never been to Heligoland, but I understand that 'damals(tm)' ships bringing visitors from the mainland would not actually dock in Heligoland harbor. They would anchor in the roadstead (really? That's what LEO has for 'Reede') and smaller boats would come along side and visitors would transfer to these for the final stretch to the island. Always provided a bit of excitement if the sea was a bit rough that day. Does anybody here know whether this somewhat convoluted procedure is still being used? Author (236158) 22 Nov 12, 05:09 Comment. I drove to the Netherlands to rest for a few days.

On the way I listened to the 'Psychedelic Pill' by Neil Young and Crazy Horse. Rather special release, some titles are longer than 20 minutes! I also go their 'Americana' with their very own interpretations of 'classical' American songs. Not really bright weather near the coast, but not as foggy as it was in my area.

Are the leftpondians still busy with the leftovers from Thanksgiving? I hope you all 'survived' Black Friday and got already some Christmas gifts:-) Author (554696) 24 Nov 12, 09:05 Comment. All leftpondians seem to recover from Thanksgiving (or still working their way through the turkey-leftovers?).

I always thought the leftover stories were exaggerations, but going by a story of a friend at work (aka colleague for my German brain) they are quite exact. Amy - not sure if it is any consolation, but I had a blue sky. No Black Friday shopping here either (well, I had to the supermarket, but that does not count, does it?). I am updating my online profile for my job hunt. Unfortunately, I work in an area where you need to have the latest information out there - maybe it also works without, but I can always tell when someone is interested in my application as I can see the hits on my profile. Author (426973) 26 Nov 12, 03:35 Comment. @#207/Emil 14: I am not (yet?) a specialist for Neil Young. His interpretation of 'Americana' is difficult in some parts, I think I still prefer the 'originals'(?) which I am used to like Kingston Trio for Tom Dooley, but it gets complicated already with a song like This land is your land as I have several special versions (Baez, Peter, Paul & Mary etc.) The Psychedelic Pill is something which needs to be listened to several times, I think there are parts which one may 'overhear' at the first time. Going to see SKYFALL tomorrow, curious about it.

Another 'music issue': Is anybody else as crazy as I am collecting different versions of one song? For the Christmas season it is the 'little drummer boy' for me; but there are some others which have been dubbed by so many e.g. 'Stenka Rasin' and 'Ode an die Freude'.

Author (554696) 26 Nov 12, 22:28 Comment. @Lara - did you enjoy 'Effi das Biest'?

I think there was a 'Les Miserables' movie in the early 90s, I think I watched it before I went to see the musical. Carullus - I don't think Lara wanted to say this - especially as it is not really possible:) zu Weihnachten kommt der Film als Musical ins Kino. Or zu Weihnachten kommt das Musical als Film ins Kino but then - Les Miserables was a book first - so the question is, did they make the musical into a movie, or do they just re-tell the story? Hello hello, I hope you are all doing well and had a fabulous Thanksgiving. I have to say, I miss you guys and the CC, but I just don't find the time to read and post these days. Maybe I'll be back next February, since I was informed last week, that my contract will not be extended at the end of January and I will have to find a new job asap.

Oddly enough, it's not because I'm not doing a good job, but because my boss doesn't like me personally. She said so to my face. She finds me irritating, because I am not extrovert enough.

I am too quiet for her liking. She said she can't read me, because I never act on impulse, but are rather 'controlled'.

I guess there's not much I can do about that then, since I don't intend to change this, what I would call 'professional attitude' towards clients and problems, nor is it actually in me. Anyhow, that's the news on my end. Hope to write more soon.:) Author (432226) 27 Nov 12, 13:55 Comment. I saw a trailer for that a few days ago, and despite the fact that I vaguely remember seeing the film as a teenager and finding it unbearably sad, I couldn't take it seriously. It might be different if you watch the whole film and are more immersed in the story, but it was just totally bizarre that those people do something perfectly normal (like walk down the street) and then suddenly burst into song for no apparent reason.

Very strange;) Er hat allen die Show gestohlen is fine. Jools, it must be difficult to be told that you're being dismissed for personal reasons, but I for one would prefer that to some vague mumblings that just leave me wondering what on earth I did wrong. And if your personalities clash, there's not much you can do, as you said yourself, nor is it 'your fault'. I'm amazed, though, that your boss is so unprofessional as to see that as an unsurmountable obstacle. Surely she should be able to deal with personality types other than herself?! Author (418762) 27 Nov 12, 15:25 Comment.

There are a lot of things she should be able to. Number one on my list would be to know when to stop talking. She could have just left it at: 'Sorry, but there's not enough money for another full-time employee.' Instead she continued and just went on and on about irritating she finds me. The hubby is alright although he is currently also living on the verge of losing his job/project. At the moment it's a day-to-day struggle which is too crazy and comprehensive to explain here.

But I am looking forward to going to an Austrian winter wonderland for Xmas and a few days 'back home' in London at the end of January.:) I can't believe we haven't been back yet, not even for a weekend, since we moved away. Author (432226) 27 Nov 12, 16:51 Comment.

@228 hm -- us: The version of the King's Singers was one of the very early ones which I got. It is amazing WHO is in the Who's Who of the different versions. Baez, Bowie, Cash, Feliciano. Pink Martini was 'new' for me, thanks. I still prefer to have my own CD.

Some computers (harddrives) collapsed, but I have the 'original' still in the cupboard. Of course for the car it is much easier to have mp3 on a CD compressed or on a stick (which I could not play in my last car). The Bond 'SKYFALL' was quite violent and had some logical mistakes but well played. I had not checked the actors in advance so R. Fiennes and A.Finney were nice surprises. Craig is not my favorite actor for Bond.

I really liked the scenes which reminded of previous Bond-movies. Talking of which: I didn't mean to make anybody feel old, I bought my first CD when I was twenty and it looked a bit lonely among all those vinyls (not to mention the fact that I didn't have a player. But the CD was on offer, and I was confident that I would get one at some point in the future). So if you insist, then I'm old too;) Author (418762) 28 Nov 12, 19:58 Comment. My ride was ok. I guess some of the left-pondians would have been shivering, main speed was about 100mi per hour, but some road works and speed limits (plus a break) made it the usual ride of 4.5 hours. Only a very little snow in the Sauerland hills.

About music: I think it is interesting that some music sounds much better sung by others than the original writer, e.g. I hate most of Dylan's songs sung by himself though I love many; some others would probably be interesting if somebody else would be allowed (? Get the permission?) to perform songs by somebody else. Any opinions about Josh Groban? Author (554696) 29 Nov 12, 20:18 Comment. Hello snails!

It's a long time since I've peeked in, let alone contributed anything here which is mainly due to having too much work to do. But then again I also don't have much to say at the moment.:o) But today is a quiet day so I've found the time to catch up a little on what's been going on in the CC. And as I read that Lara is reading Fontane I just had to comment. Good luck with that, Lara.

Most Germans I know don't like 'Effi Briest', or even Fontane very much. No idea why but then maybe I'm partial because he's from near my home town.

But I would agree that his style of writing takes a bit of time getting used to and for our eyes and ears today some of his language sounds rather quaint. I can't remember whether this was the case in Effi Briest as well but in other books I've read (Unwiderbringlich and Jenny Treibel are the ones that spring to mind) I noticed that he was using local dialect as well sometimes which might be a bit harder to understand.

And that's really all I have to say (see above). I see a few unfamiliar faces (or rather read a few unfamiliar names) so I quickly give a warm welcome to all the newcomers. Kuch Kuch Hota Hai Mp4 Hd Video Song Download here. Author (236351) 30 Nov 12, 12:26 Comment.
